Importance of Exercising

Many of us dread the word "exercise." But, fact of the matter is, most of us aren't getting enough of it. Whether young or old, staying fit and in good health is a very important part of our daily schedule. Here at The Windsor, we have exercise and balance classes that many residents can take advantage of. It is the number one way to avoid falls and set backs in your everyday living. Our classes are designed to be fun, social and effective, so why not give them a try? You will sleep better, feel stress relief and meet a few new friends along the way. A real win, win situation for all. See you in class!

Adopt-a-Grandparent

Did you know that moths only come out in the evening hours and butterflies during the day? It's true! How do we know? Our first grade students from VCS told us during their visit in March. They students mad us betterflies that are hanging proudly in our Life Enrichment Center. They also gave a speech about their favorite mammal. We shared popcorn, laughter, stories and even some hugs while the children were here. The children left with big smiles on their faces and a St. Patrick's Day balloon in hand. In case you missed them, they'll be back in April. It has been a wonderful program and the residents of The Windsor really enjoy them!

Sneak Peak Open House

The Windsor of Venice held a Sneak Peak Open House on December 6, 2009. Over 350 people toured through The Windsor of Venice and enjoyed refreshments. We placed treasure chests throughout the residence. With The Windsor of Venice dressed in Holiday decor and songs sung by Christmas Carolers, The Windsor of Venice was filled with Holiday Cheer.

VIP Open House

Our VIP Open House was held on December 15, 2009. Over 100 guests, including professionals in the community, Founder's Club members and family, and friends, enjoyed delicious food and great music by Betsy Wagner. Each guest received a special VIP tour of The Windsor of Venice. A great time was had by all!

Introducing...

Valerie Morris, RN, Health Care Coordinator is a graduate of Overlook Hospital School of Nursing and the University of New York. She has over 33 years of experience and has her degrees in both Nursing and Psychology. She is Board Certified in Psychiatric and Mental Health. From the Northeast, Valerie has called Florida her home for over 20 years.

Matthew Connelly, Maintenance Director is a true Floridan who was born at Venice Community Hospital. If you can't find him at work, you can find him on the water. He enjoys fishing, diving, and snow skiing.

Chef Randy Madsen recently joined The Windsor and brought with him an extensive knowledge of culinary skills. Chef Randy's love of the kitchen goes back over 25 years. As a young teenager, you could often find Randy shucking oysters at the landmark seafood restaurant "the Fishery" in Pass-A-Grille Beach, Florida. Chef Randy's main goals for The Windsor are to consistently provide great food and enticing menus every day.

Amy Stoutjesdyk, Life Enrichment Coordinator, is a native of Michigan. She has a degree in deaf interpreting. She has worked in public schools as a deaf interpreter for over 15 years. She has two beautiful children that keep her very busy outside of work.

American Cancer Society Birthday Bash

On November 4th, The Windsor of Venice hosted the Biggest Birthday Party ever! The American Cancer Society has adopted the theme of "Celebrating more Birthdays," so to kick off the season of Relay for Life, The Windsor of Venice threw a Birthday Bash. Relay for Life brings the community together to fight back against cancer. There is no finish line for Relay until we find a cure!
Anyone who has battled Cancer is invited to join us in the Survivors Lap and Dinner that will be held in your honor at the Relay for Life on April 23, 2010. Please contact Shannon at 941-232-6182 for more information.

Introducing Cassie Snider, Administrative Assistant

Cassie Snider, Administrative Assistant, for The Windsor of Venice, is a graduate of Ohio Dominican University. Cassie was born in Columbus, Ohio, and started her career in the field of finance in which she continued in for over eight years. In July of 2000, Cassie took on the role of being her grandmother's primary caregiver. It was then that Cassie developed a deep passion for helping others. Cassie and her husband have three children, who keep them very busy being involved in local sports.

Above & Below: We shared smiles and waves in the Sun Fiesta Parade on October 17th with Relay for Life! The Float featured Cancer Survivors and was surrounded by volunteers working towards a cure. Invitations to the Kick Off Party on Nov. 4th hosted by The Windsor were handed out to the crowd.

Introducting Connie Tolley & Shannon Thines

Connie Tolley, Residence Director

Connie Tolley, Residence Director for The Windsor, was born in West Virginia at the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Connie is a Registered Nurse with a Bachelor's Degree from Bluefield State College, and received her Practitioner's in Gerontology from West Virginia University. Connie has received the honor of being certified by The American College of Health Care Administrator. She is also recognized by the Florida Administration Licensing Board as a Preceptor, a credentialing giving her the privilege of mentoring young leaders in the Senior Housing/HealthCare Industry. Connie has two daughters; both have followed in her foot steps and work in the Senior Housing/HealthCare Industry in Venice. In her free time, you will find Connie playing golf, shopping with her daughters, or shark teeth hunting on the beach. It has been rumored that she is a "Professional Shark Tooth Hunter" with thousands of shark teeth in her collection.

Shannon Thinnes, Marketing Director

Shannon Thinnes, Marketing Director and a graduate of the University of South Florida, brings with her 12 years of experience in the Assisted Living and Senior Housing Industry. "I have been continually impressed by the thoughtfulness and high standards that have gone into the planning and construction of The Windsor of Venice," said Thinnes. "One gland at the plans and I knew I wanted to be part of it." Shannon started her career as a counselor and found that she was working with many older adults; as a result, she became an advocate. It is evident that Shannon is a nurturer; she and her husband have six children. As the children grow older and become more independent, she is replacing them with stray dogs. Much to her husband's dismay, she currently has three! If Shannon is not running her youngest daughter to local dance competitions, you can find her on the river with her three boys fishing their favorite catfish hole. "Its a blessing to live, work, and play in paradise."

Enriching Activities
Life enriching activities come alive at The Windsor of Venice. Residents participate in hobbies, cultural events, educational opportunities, religious activities, and interesting trips, along with the opportunity for new experiences. New friends are made and relationships strengthened by spending enjoyable time together. Special cultural and community events are a highlight on the Windsor Life Enrichment calendar. The Life Enrichment Coordinator and the nurse create The Windsor Wellness Program which may include fun exercises, activities, and health education. The Windsor Wellness Program is designed to enhance the overall health and well-being of the residents.

Companion Services
You may choose additional personalized support or services through our specialized program called Windsor Companions. Windsor Companions spend time one-on-one with the resident providing special attention or care such as reading, shopping, letter writing, supervision, and support.

Reflections Program
Caring for a loved one with Alzheimer's or other memory impairments is a very personal, loving dedication to service. It requires service for specific and individual needs. More often, the resident with memory loss needs assistance with life's daily activities including personal care but may not have an acute medical condition requiring around the clock skilled nursing or instruction. Finding that unique combination of physical setting and specialized care is a journey traveled by many families. At Reflections, our trained staff works closely with family members and friends to assemble a "Life History" identifying the personal experiences of each resident's life.
